Guo Cheng, deputy director of the National Nuclear Safety Administration and director of the Nuclear Facilities Safety Supervision Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, pointed out at the interpretation meeting that nuclear energy, as the only alternative energy that can be used on a large scale, has become an inevitable choice for my country's energy strategy.
Tang Bo, deputy director of the Nuclear Power Safety Supervision Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, introduced at the interpretation meeting that a total of 19 nuclear power units have been put into operation in mainland my country. So far, there has been no international nuclear event classification (INES) level 2 or above. There have been no incidents of pollution and harm to personnel or the environment, and the overall safety level is in good condition. Among the main operating performance indicators of the World Nuclear Operators Organization (WANO), my country's operating nuclear power units are generally at a better international level, some units have reached the international advanced level, and some units are among the best.
This year, at the sixth meeting of the Central Financial and Economic leading Group, General Secretary Xi Jinping stressed that under the premise of adopting the highest international safety standards and ensuring safety, we should step up efforts to start the construction of new nuclear power projects in the eastern coastal areas. In this regard, Tang Bo revealed at the interpretation meeting that the country is formulating a nuclear power restart plan and is still soliciting opinions.
