"In my country's existing energy structure, nuclear power accounts for only 2%, while the world average is 16% to 18%; in the context of smog raging across the country, if China's nuclear power accounts for about 10% of the energy consumption structure in the future, Will make a significant contribution to the control of air pollution." Recently, at the 39th "Scientists and Media Face-to-face" event held by the China Association for Science and Technology, experts such as Academician Ye Qizhen, deputy director of the Science and Technology Committee of China National Nuclear Industry Corporation, and Zhou Dadi, former director of the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, said that "China's nuclear power has considerable room for improvement and will usher in the spring of development". Experts use data and facts to fully express their confidence in the future of nuclear power.

Nuclear Power: Economical and Efficient Clean Energy

On March 24, at the third Nuclear Security Summit held in The Hague, the Netherlands, President Xi Jinping proposed to "attach equal importance to development and security, and develop nuclear energy on the premise of ensuring safety". Earlier, Premier Li Keqiang stated in this year's "Government Work Report" that it is necessary to promote changes in energy production and consumption patterns and start a number of hydropower and nuclear power projects.

Academician Ye Qizhen said that to solve environmental problems, especially air pollution, the development of nuclear power is very important. He said the smog has a lot to do with the burning of chemical fuels, especially coal in power plants. "Compare a 1 million-kilowatt coal-fired unit with a 1 million-kilowatt nuclear power unit, which burns 3 million tons of coal a year, while a nuclear power plant has only 20 tons of nuclear fuel. The former emits more than 3500 tons of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitrides and soot, while nuclear power has zero emissions."

Zhou Dadi also said: "to solve the haze problem, we must use more clean energy. In a variety of low-carbon energy and clean energy, nuclear power is clean, or the most economical choice. At present, the cost of nuclear power is obviously lower than that of wind power and solar energy, and the power generation is stable. 0.1 billion kilowatts of nuclear power can replace about 0.23 billion tons of standard coal, with four wind power stations of the same kilowatt level and six or seven solar power stations of the same kilowatt level."

Nuclear power in China is very safe"

Nuclear power is clean and efficient, but is the safety of nuclear power plants in China at present reassuring?

Ye Qizhen said that at present, the localization level of nuclear power in China has reached more than 85%. The "Hualong No.1" under development, 17 units in operation and more than 20 units under construction are mostly China's own technology, which is quite mature. According to the classification of nuclear events and nuclear accidents stipulated by the International Atomic Energy Agency, 0-4 is an event, and 5-7 is an accident. So far, there have been no incidents of level 2 or above in the operation of nuclear power in China, and the operation is quite safe, let alone an accident.

Ye Qizhen introduced, "Take Hualong One as an example. It is developed by CNNC and CGN using third-generation nuclear power technology integration, using CNNC ACP1000 technology and 177 core, and using CF independent brand developed by CNNC as fuel. The important task of going global is quite mature in technology. CNNC and CGN are currently actively promoting the construction of demonstration projects in China."

Zhou Dadi said: "my country's nuclear power has the advantage of backwardness. Drawing on the advanced experience of three generations, it not only fully meets the safety indicators, but also has complete serious accident prevention and mitigation measures. I visited a nuclear power plant. In order to prevent large aircraft from hitting, a 1.8-meter-thick reinforced concrete wall was built. Not to mention that ordinary rockets and small missiles cannot be hit. Even large Boeing 747 aircraft crashed into the nuclear power plant. It's okay. China's development of nuclear power is much higher than that of other countries in the past in terms of technical safety, management safety, and regulatory safety. Now China's nuclear power is very safe."

10%: the ideal proportion

It is understood that at present, 31 countries around the world have built nuclear power plants, accounting for 17% of the global power generation. In 2012, there were 437 units in operation worldwide, with a total installed capacity of 0.37 billion kilowatts. Among them, 104 in the United States, 58 in France and 50 in Japan. The proportion of nuclear power in the total energy of various countries is as high as 77.7 per cent in France, 34.6 per cent in South Korea, nearly 20 per cent in the United States, 18 per cent in Russia and about 2 per cent in mainland China. Therefore, in terms of the proportion of nuclear power in total energy, if we want to reach the world average level, there is still a lot of room for the development of nuclear power in China.

Ye Qizhen said that the National Energy Administration proposed in the 2014 energy work guidance that the approval of key nuclear power projects should be initiated in a timely manner, nuclear power construction in coastal areas should be steadily promoted, and nuclear power plant sites in inland areas should be protected. my country will continue to develop inland nuclear power in the next step. If my country starts 5-6 units each year during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, a total of about 20 units can be started. By 2020, my country's nuclear power installed capacity will be put into operation. Reached about 60 million kilowatts.

Zhou Dadi said, "If my country wants to control air pollution, it must take a diversified path of energy consumption and develop various clean energy sources such as nuclear power. If the contribution rate of nuclear energy in my country's entire energy consumption structure reaches about 10%, this will be an ideal ratio.
